The 2017 Orientation Party for Chinese Government Scholarship Winners was hosted by the Chinese Embassy in South Sudan and South Sudan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the South Sudan - China Friendship Association (SSCHIFA) on Saturday, 26th August at the Hai Mauna Classic Hotel in Juba. At the orientation party it was announced that 240 South Sudanese graduate students had won Chinese Government scholarships to study in China. A huge increase in comparison to the students of 2016 where only 81 students received scholarship opportunities. This batch of students will go to China in September to pursue their Master's and Doctoral degrees in a variety of fields including communications, medicine, economics and international relations.
The party themed, "Learning for Personal Success and National Progress" was fitting as the current and future scholars of South Sudan gathered to prepare for studies and impart knowledge on each other. This party enabled the students to gather some advice regarding their time in China from the Chinese embassy staff and senior officials, along with graduated students, e.g. Andrew Vuga Jackson; a master graduate of the Communication University of China in Beijing. This included suggestions on how to adapt, what to expect throughout the overall period of study and of course, what is expected of them when in China.
A special thanks to the Chinese Government for awarding scholarships to so many South Sudanese students this year. Thanks to those in the Chinese embassy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and SSCHIFA who contributed tireless efforts in the success of the applications to study in China. Thanks to the event organisers and the venue hosts in Hai Mauna Classic Hotel for a successful Orientation Party and a wonderful morning.
